Drawing a face in profile.

Welcome to the first of the monthly workshops. I certainly hope we are all excited about improving our skills. For our first workshop, we’re trying something that many people have trouble with. We will be drawing a human face in profile.

The human face’s profile is difficult for a few reasons. The primary reason is that there is little room for error in regards to certain sections of the face. The space between the nose and the upper lip are, for me, a nightmare. Plus, when you take into account gender variations, profile faces can prove a bit frustrating.

So, your mission for this month, should you choose to accept, is to draw some faces in profile. They can be any style, and any characters real or imagined. They can be realistic, or cartoony. The only caveat though, is that you should try to do some more reeled in, realistic profiles as well. On top of this, why not try some variation? Fat faces, boney faces, strong chins, weak chins, big noses, small stub noses, just about any combinations you can think of. Post, post, post.

I will be including some images below. Before you try those, check out some of the links I have included. Feel free to include your own links if you feel you’ve found a good one.

Question! Should we attempt to draw a realistic human profile based on photographs and such, for the purposes of this exercise? I feel it would be more worthwhile to the improvement of our skills if we had to draw from a source rather than from what's in our own minds.

Working from photo references is always good, and a google image search should find plenty for you.

Really though, this is a pretty open activity.

I did both for good measure. Only problem is, my only willing model has a beard like Moses. (Yes, that hairy guy? IS my editor/brother.)

Seriously speaking, faces in profile is practically half (if not more) of LOP. I should bloody well hope I get enough practice at this.

EDIT: Btw, Drax, move the eyes back a little farther, let the backs of heads look a little rounder. They're lookin' a bit squished.

Here's some from a project I've been working on lately. Since I use a more cartoony style, I usually don't have as much trouble with profiles... the angle that gives me the most trouble is the almost-but-not-quite-profile view.

I do! The time I spent on this one gave me an excuse to sit down and draw something other than my comics and projects for Invid, and it was nicely refreshing.

I would like to do it, but no promises... I have been crammed with homework for the past 2 months, and I'm not sure if it let up next month. I should be ok in December though! ^_^

I have decided that Golden Dragon Girl will do November, and Aphex for December. Mad Scientist, we'll shoot for January for you.

When you've made your thread, GDG, send me a PM so I can sticky it. Also, feel free to continue posting in here, even though we've moved onto the next workshop.

Title should be in this format:

Workshop 002- November: Whatever the subject is here
