I say "shading by hand" because, to be quite frank, when I shade with the computer I cheat like crazy. And if one person does it, they can't be the only one. (It's just not really practice that way!)
Shading by hand, especially shading in ink, can also be incorporated into computer shading for greater effect, plus it can add detail and a grittier feel, so it's a worthwhile pursuit. And since even minimal shading can add "pop" to one's lineart, it's hardly a waste of time. Also, finding tutorials that weren't for computer shading? Pain in the rear. Although I found this tutorial blog that made me all kinds of happy, because it had several. Yay! http://www.learntoart.com/index.php/archives/drawing/how-to-shade/ http://www.learntoart.com/index.php/archives/drawing/how-to-shade-a-sphere-tutorial/ http://www.learntoart.com/index.php/archives/drawing/how-to-shade-with-pointillism/ http://www.learntoart.com/index.php/archives/drawing/shading-techniques-hatching-scribbling-pointillism/
Unfortunately I wasn't able to find something that catered specifically to dramatic, comic style shading (stupid light fixtures) (no, don't ask) however the second set of pics I did should give a general idea of what I'm talking about.
I strongly suggest at least trying the face lit from below. It's tricky, and you might want to get a flashlight and look in the mirror for reference, but it's so, SO effective and rewarding. Also, the face labeled "BLADES" was shaded both with ink and graphite. This is also something I recommend trying, if you never have before. |

Wow! That's some nice boob-shading!
Er, yes. Well. I really like shading with pencil, and I'll frequently try it with pens when I doodle. Almost everything I draw is in a color scheme of black and white alternating regions, it can get pretty weird. |

While I do everything digitally nowadays, the skills I use were all learned using traditional mediums.
The only thing I can really add at the moment is to keep in mind the intensity of your light source, the material you're drawing, and the shape of the object you are drawing. The more intense your light source, the higher your contrast should be, unless you have a lot of light reflection or a strong secondary light source. In addition, STOCK PHOTOS ARE YOUR FRIENDS. When in doubt, google up something similar to what you're drawing and study how the light plays in photographs off the surface of the object. There's no better way to get your lighting right than using photos, aside from drawing from life. |

@ Modesty: Hmm. When I looked on DeviantArt, I just found a bunch of Photoshop tutorials. That's odd.

Shading by hand? Okay, I'm game. I don't think I blended it well but it would've felt odd not blacking out the sky. =/

Did this while my nephew was using my laptop to watch a movie. I screwed up her anatomy pretty hardcore - I tried to draw her mostly from the side, but not quite, like if we say front = 1 and back = 0, then she was supposed to be at about 0.4-0.45, but I screwed it up pretty bad. I also screwed up her arm width due to that. Done entirely in 0.05mm pencil. |

My two most recent comics have been hand shaded. To what extent I can pull it off.
